Ward Recycling has shipped its first vessel of Heavy Melting Scrap (HMS) from its newly opened deep sea export dock facility at Associated British Ports (ABP) in Immingham.

A total of 20,000 tonnes of metal was on-board the shipment

The Derbyshire-based metal and waste management company shipped HMS 1 and 2 from Immingham to Habas in Nemrut Bay, Turkey.

The ship, named MV Fearless, has five storage holds and four on-board cranes to unload the scrap, and will transport almost 20,000 tonnes of HMS 1 and 2, grade 80:20.

HMS 1 and 2 comprise obsolete scrap metal only – iron and steel recovered from items demolished or dismantled at the end of their life, such as construction and demolition waste or railway upgrade projects.

Ward say it has recovered the iron and steel from its metal and waste processing plants in the UK, as well as purchasing scrap from local customers in and around its other four sites.

 ‘Major milestone’

The shipment was the first since the opening of Ward’s fifth facility in April 2018 ( see letsrecycle.com story).

Since opening the dock, Ward added that it has employed five full-time and permanent staff, and invested in new infrastructure, site upgrades and plant equipment.

Commenting on the first shipment from the dock, Thomas Ward, commercial manager at Ward Recycling, says the it is a major milestone for the company and explained some of the opportunities it provides .

“It opens up one of the largest global markets for scrap metal to us, due to Turkey’s production of rebar for use in construction and manufacturing,” he explained.

Mr Ward added: “We can now independently import and export steel in bulk to and from anywhere in the world. At least another five vessels like this are expected ship out this year.”
