Veolia set for £35 million Stafford collection contract

By 23/08/2017News

Veolia has been announced as the preferred choice for Stafford borough’s £35 million household waste and recycling collections contract.

Stafford: residents are set to have waste collected by Veolia

In what the council has called its “biggest ever contract”, Veolia will be collecting waste and recycling in Stafford for the next ten years – under an award worth around £3.5 million a year.

If confirmed for the contract, Veolia will be taking over the collection service from the current contractor, Biffa, in February 2018.

The French-owned company will continue to collect general waste and recycling on alternate weeks, with green bins for residual waste, blue for recycling and brown for garden waste. Stafford reports a current recycling rate of 54% from its 57,000 households.

Preferred

Announcing the preferred bidder status, Stafford borough emphasised Veolia’s “strong and established” presence in the Midlands region – with local offices in the neighbouring area. The company is also Staffordshire’s waste treatment contractor and has a long-term contract to run the energy recovery facility at Four Ashes within the county.

Cllr Frank Finlay, cabinet member for environment and health, said: “We want this important service to our residents to continue to be delivered in an excellent manner.

Veolia is set to take over from Biffa next year

“We have undertaken a thorough tendering exercise to find a partner who can deliver a household waste collection service that our householders expect while providing value for money for local council tax payers.”

Pleased

Estelle Brachlianoff, senior executive vice president, Veolia UK and Ireland said: “We are very pleased to have been confirmed as preferred bidder for the contract to deliver recycling and waste services for Stafford Borough Council. Our teams are dedicated to providing an efficient service to the communities we serve, and this new contract will help increase recycling rates across the borough enabling it to better realise the value of its recycling as a valuable commodity.”
