Plastic waste exports from the UK have been dealt a further blow with the Environment Agency confirming this week that an exporter of plastic packaging waste for recycling has had its accreditation suspended under the PRN system.
In a notice, the Agency said that with effect from 3pm yesterday (17 September) Solihull-based DTS Trading Limited has had its exporter accreditation suspended under the packaging waste regulations, meaning it is currently unable to issue any PRNs for material it has exported.

DTS Trading, which operates from a trading estate between Birmingham and Coventry is listed as a ‘large’ exporter of scrap, due to its handling of over 400 tonnes of material per year.
The company is thought to handle material from local authority and commercial sources, including mixed plastic bottles.
Timescale
In its notice, the Agency said that it would notify the sector “if the suspension is removed”. No timescale or justification for the suspension was given in the letter.

Accreditation is important under the packaging waste system as it means that exporters of packaging waste, such as plastics for recycling, are eligible to raise export PRNs which can be sold as evidence of recycling under the UK’s PRN packaging waste system.
PRNs for plastic are currently trading at more than £70 per tonne, providing a significant financial boost to companies reprocessing and exporting materials, particularly at a time when pressures in the market due to closures in a number of overseas outlets, have had a downward impact on prices across a number of grades.
