Plans for replacement Lakeside EfW submitted

By 19/06/2019News

A planning application for a like-for-like replacement for the Lakeside Energy from Waste facility at Colnbrook has been submitted to Slough borough council this week.

The 440,000 tonnes per-year capacity facility and adjoining high temperature incinerator are to be relocated to accommodate the proposed third runway at Heathrow Airport, further details of which were outlined yesterday (18 June).

The Lakeside EfW is likely to be moved to accomodate a third runway at Heathrow Airport

Lakeside EfW is a joint venture between Grundon Waste Management and Viridor, while the adjoining incinerator is independently operated by Grundon Waste Management.

Under the proposals, the facilities will be taken down, with and moved around 600 metres north west of the current location in Colnbrook, Slough, to the west of the Iver South Sludge Dewatering Centre.

Planning

According to Lakeside EfW, the planning application for the replacement facilities has now been submitted to Slough borough council to be validated, to ensure all the necessary information has been included.

Once the validation process is complete, the council’s planning department will publicise the full planning application and the associated Environmental Impact Assessment on its website.

The same information will also be placed on the Lakeside website. The council will then carry out its own public consultation on the proposed developments.

LKS EfW Director Richard Skehens said: “This is a significant milestone in our proposals for a like-for-like replacement of the existing Lakeside facilities. We’re grateful to everyone who has helped us reach this point and look forward to working with Slough Borough Council as the planning application progresses through the planning system.”

Opened in 2010, the Lakeside EfW is a treatment plant for municipal and commercial waste in the South West of England.

Plans for a third runway at Heathrow were backed last year by MPs, who voted overwhelmingly in favour of the plans in June 2018.

Consultation on the Heathrow Airport expansion, which includes proposals for the future layout of the airport, including a third runway and other airport infrastructure such as terminals and road access, runs until 13 September.
