Environment director selected for Newham council
Newham council have selected Jamie Blake as their permanent corporate director of environment and sustainable transport.
Jamie Blake is now corporate director of environment and sustainable transport at Newham council
Mr Blake will lead and manage services which include recycling, street cleansing and waste management, as well as broader services dealing with the climate emergency.
He will join from Barnet Council where he has been executive director for environment since 2015. Before that he was a director at Tower Hamlets Council and worked for London Remade, a specialist regeneration business.
He said: “I am looking forward to supporting Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz and Chief Executive Althea Loderick in delivering a local environment that residents deserve, including better air quality and sustainable transport, as well dealing with the pressing issue of the climate emergency.”
Restore Datashred announce new managing director
Duncan Gooding becomes managing director of Restore Datashred
Document and paper shredders Restore Datashred have announced Duncan Gooding as its new managing director, succeeding Anthony Pearlgood.
Mr Gooding has previously worked at Roc technologies, a ‘business transformation company’. He also previously worked as chief operating officer at Talk Talk Business, managing a team of over 500 employees and providing services to over 130,000 customers.
Restore Datashred said that it hoped his experience “will help the business to grow and also ensure consistent high levels of customer satisfaction. We are very excited to have him on board!”
The company provides a variety of shredding services to businesses and organisations of all sizes throughout the UK.
WRAP appoints three new trustees
WRAP has appointed three new trustees to its board – Sarah Chapman, Sachin Kapila and Michaelene Kinnersley.
Sarah Chapman has led a number of businesses and organisations focused on positive climate impact. She is currently CEO and co-founder of finance firm Faro Energy, which is investing in distributed solar projects in emerging markets.
Sachin Kapila is a leading industry expert on business and biodiversity. He worked on projects with one of the world’s largest environment consultancies before joining the oil company Shell. He recently became chief policy officer of AI company Cervest.
Michaelene Kinnersley has supported the development of not-for-profit organisations for over 25 years. Currently she is head of partnerships at the Kofi Annan Foundation.
Responding to the appointments, Dr Marcus Gover – WRAP’s chief executive – said: “We’ve achieved some incredible things at WRAP in working towards our vision of a world where the planet’s precious resources are used sustainably.
“But we want to go further and faster and I am delighted to be bringing such a dynamic and vastly experienced group of people on board who share our ambition and can help us achieve it.”
ACP appoints retail sector representative
A representative for the retail sector has been appointed to the Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP) following an open selection process.
Waitrose’s Karen Graley will join the ACP committee
Karen Graley is responsible for innovation of new packaging initiatives at Waitrose and will now join the ACP. This follows the resignation of M&S’ Kevin Vyse who served on the committee for a year and a half – he has now moved onto a non-retail role.
Phil Conran, Chairman of the ACP, said: “I am delighted to welcome Karen onto the Committee at this very busy time.
“Her highly respected standing in the retail sector, expert knowledge of packaging and innovative thinking will be a great asset to us in meeting the challenges set by Defra, and I look forward to her input and support.”
New chair of Natural Resources Wales appointed
Sir David Henshaw has been appointed as chair of Natural Resources Wales – the government body which manages waste regulation and other environmental sectors in Wales – after serving as its interim chair.

Sir David has been serving as interim chair since November 2018, but has now been officially confirmed as chair by Lesley Griffiths, Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs in the Welsh Senedd.
“When I took on the role of interim chair in November 2018, my intention was to help the organisation rebuild from some of its challenges and then hand over to a successor. But that changed when I got to know the organisation better,” Mr Henshaw said.
“The passion, commitment and expertise of staff; the importance of the role we can play in tackling climate and environment emergencies; and a deeper appreciation of our successes and our ability to improve Wales’ present and future. These are compelling reasons why I wanted to stay for longer.”
