A total of 58 firefighters from crews at Plaistow, Poplar, Millwall, Shadwell and Whitechapel attended the scene, as well as eight fire engines.

Scrap

The fire, which damaged a quantity of scrap metal and part of a shipping container, was brought under control just after 4.30pm, with firefighters remaining on site until 8.30pm to prevent flare-ups.

An estimated 60 people were evacuated from neighbouring properties as a precaution, according to the Fire Brigade which is now investigating the cause of the fire.

Commenting on the situation yesterday watch Manager Richard Tapp, who was at the scene said: “The smoke was very visible and could be seen from miles around. Firefighters worked hard to bringĀ it under control and will be there throughout the evening damping down pockets of fire.”
