Ince plans laid for ‘plastic to hydrogen’ plant

Peel Environmental has submitted plans to Cheshire West and Chester council for a £7 million ‘waste plastic to hydrogen plant’ near Ellesmere Port.

The application forms part of a £130 million deal Peel has signed with technology firm PowerHouse Energy and energy from waste specialist Waste2Tricity to develop 11 plastic to hydrogen plants across the UK.

As announced in August, the three companies have been collaborating on the proposed facility at Peel’s Protos renewable energy site near Ellesmere Port in Cheshire (see letsrecycle.com story). The latest announcement marks the official planning permission being submitted.

The plant is to use the “UK first” advanced thermal treatment technology developed by PowerHouse Energy Group called DMG (Distributed Modular Generation).

Thermal

According to Powerhouse, DMG “thermally converts waste feedstocks into an extremely valuable intermediate product – EcoSynthesis Gas – in an environmentally responsible and economically viable manner.”

The proposed plant is to take up to 35 tonnes of unrecyclable plastics a day and create a local source of hydrogen which could be used to power road vehicles, according to the developers.

This could then “be used as a clean and low-cost fuel for buses, Heavy Goods Vehicles and cars, helping to reduce air pollution and improve air quality on local roads.”

Air quality

Commenting on the application to the council, Myles Kitcher from Peel Environmental said: “Using waste plastic to generate a local source of hydrogen could not only help to reduce our reliance on landfill but improve local air quality with a clean and low-cost fuel for buses, HGVs and cars.”

John Hall from Waste2Tricity added: “We are excited to have submitted plans for this first plant – the first in a series of developments that have the capability to make the North West a leader in moving towards clean energy and to help in achieving the Government’s target of net zero emissions by 2050.”
