Helistrat signs waste deal with Bestway Retail

By 14/08/2018News

Helistrat has been awarded a three year contract worth an estimated £700,000 for the management of waste and recycling at over 200 Central Convenience and Bargain Booze stores across the UK.

Helistrat will process waste for all Central Convenience stores across the UK

The Portsmouth-based waste management company signed the deal with Bestway Retail, which bought the Bargain Booze chain in April 2018 after its previous owners went into administration.

The deal also comes less than two months since outsourcing waste management and recycling firm Reconomy announced the business acquisition of the company (see letsrecycle.com story)

Helistrat say that over the course of the contract, it will “support Bestway Retail in the continued improvement of its environmental performance and help to control future waste management costs”.

It added that it will aim to “improve the availability of waste and environmental data”, enabling the retailer to improve its reporting capability and further optimise its waste and recycling services.

Processing

Although exact tonnages were not disclosed, Helistrat says that the processing is dependent on the region but “where possible” it recycles the material  with energy recovery the second option through an energy from waste plant.

The company added that it will offer a range of collection services including MDR (mixed dry recycling), food, glass and non-recycling.

On the Isle of Wight there is also a scheme where newspaper and paper are donated to a local animal shelter for bedding.

Rates

Harvey Laud, Helistrat’s CEO, explained that he hopes the company will be able to help improve recycling rates in the stores over the duration of the contract.

“We look forward to working with Bestway Retail to reduce waste production, improve recycling rates in-store and develop increasingly closed-loop solutions, which are capable of getting waste material back into the supply chain as a valuable secondary resource,” he said.

This was echoed by Bestway Retail’s property director, Paul Matton, who added that the group is also looking at other ways to work with Helistrat.

“Helistrat have already demonstrated their ability to positively impact on our environmental performance and associated costs,” he explained.

Mr Matton added: “As a result, they were asked at short notice to increase the number of stores they service, which they did quickly, efficiently and without disruption. We are now actively pursuing other areas of opportunity with Helistrat.”
