Fire conference to encourage industry to work together

The waste and recycling industry will be encouraged to work together to reduce the dangers posed by fire at the 2019 Fire Prevention & Control in the Waste & Recycling Industry Conference.

Taking place on 7 November at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull, the event – which is organised by Letsrecycle.com – will help delegates to gain a greater understanding of the regulatory requirements in regards to fire.

It will also provide an opportunity for attendees to share best practise on ways to reduce the risk of a fire at waste and recycling sites.

Programme

Peter Buckley of the Environment Agency and Gareth Davies of Natural Resources Wales will draw on their national-level experience to deliver a session on how the industry can work to together to prevent waste fire.

The challenge of achieving battery segregation will be discussed by Jon Tomkins from S. Norton and Co, who will also look at how the industry can raise public awareness about the correct disposal methods for lithium batteries.

Later in the day delegates will receive an update on the wood and RDF industry documents from the Wood Recycling Association’s Julia Turner and Bethany Ledingham of the RDF Industry Group Secretariat.

Valuable insight

With fires affecting waste sites of all sizes, the conference will provide valuable insight on how the damage and distress – financial, human and environmental – caused by fires can be avoided. There will be input from regulators, insurers and waste management companies across the sector including Firefly, Fireward, Fireshield Systems & Dafo UK & Ireland, Miles Smith Insurance Group, Patol and Storm Environmental.

Attendees will receive updates from the Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) Forum and learn about developing better fire prevention plans from consultancy Eunomia’s Laura Williams.

Early detection and monitoring will be under discussion, alongside a number of industry case studies from both insurers and site operators.
