Details of the charges in the case were released by the Environment Agency. Biffa, earlier this week, indicated it would plead not guilty.

The Environment Agency alleges Biffa broke European law in 2015, “when the company tried to ship seven containers from its premises at Edmonton in north London to China via Felixstowe”. The Agency alleges that while the material was described in shipping documents as waste paper, it found household waste in contravention of Waste Shipment Regulations.

A spokesman for the company said: “Biffa is defending in the Crown Court a prosecution brought by the Environment Agency for two alleged breaches of the Transfrontier Shipment of Waste Regulations 2007. Biffa strongly refutes the allegations. The Group has no further comment to make at this time.”

Next stage of the case is to be confirmed.
