Defra surveys waste industry again on Covid-19

By 23/06/2020News

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) has launched a further survey seeking to understand the impacts of Covid-19 on the waste industry.

Aimed at waste businesses of all sizes, the survey takes around 30 minutes to complete and includes questions on tonnages, changes to material flow, staff absences and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Defra’s survey is aimed at waste businesses of all sizes

The introduction to the questionnaire reads: “To understand how challenges are developing we would be grateful if you could complete this questionnaire, whatever size of business you are.

“This will inform policy decisions, aid our contingency planning across Defra and wider government, and help us to support you and the sector at large.”

The survey closes at 11.59pm on 26 June. It can be found here.

Defra says it is keen to get a clear picture of which businesses have had to close.

It says it needs to obtain data at a regional and national level and by each type of site or facility.

The survey asks a few questions related to finance, which include some about the use of furloughing.

Defra says it plans to ask respondents to provide a further update on the information they give in this survey in two weeks’ time. Defra will use the email address respondents provide with the survey.

Surveys

A previous Defra survey sought to understand any financial pressures the waste industry in England faced as a result of the coronavirus pandemic (see letsrecycle.com story).

Another investigated the provision of PPE by councils for waste sector employees (see letsrecycle.com story).

Defra says its previous surveys covered approximately 50,000 employees in the waste sector.

It says the data it collected indicates PPE availability appears to be improving, workplace absences are falling, and the flow of certain materials are starting to increase

However, Defra says specific sectors still face challenges.
