The Cleveland Fire Brigade has said it will remain on the scene of a “significant fire” at a plastics recycling facility owned by Greenology in Cleveland, North Yorkshire, for a few days.
Fire crews were called to the fire involving compacted plastic at the Greenology Plastic Recycling Centre at Liverton Mines, East Cleveland at 9.47pm on Sunday (5 April).

A watch manager from Cleveland Fire Brigade added that by Monday morning, the incident had developed into a ”significant’ fire” but was later successfully contained.
In a statement given to letsrecycle.com today (7 April), the Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “Three fire engines remain at the scene this morning dealing with this incident and monitoring wind speed and direction.
“Due to the nature of the incident there continues to be smoke in the area so we continue to advise residents to keep doors and windows closed.”
No injuries
A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesperson said that the plastic waste at the plant was alight, and a total eight fire engines initially attended the scene.
They added: “No one was injured in the incident and the cause is yet to be established.”
It is expected that fire crews will remain at the scene for a few days, according to Cleveland Fire Brigade.
Cleveland Police are also involved in the investigation, and say they are continuing to work with the Fire Brigade to determine the cause of the fire.
A statement released by the police said: “Officers do not believe there is a risk to the public but would advise people living in the surrounding area to keep their windows and doors closed whilst the fire is being dealt with. A joint investigation with Cleveland Police and Cleveland Fire Bridge is underway to determine the cause of the fire.”
