London Freemasons provides funding for repair scheme

A project which trains long-term jobless people to repair and refurbish domestic appliances which are later sold by charities, has received £30,000 from London Freemasons.

The REWORK project, run by social and environmental charity Groundwork London, restores repairable furniture and white goods.

According to Groundwork, items that would otherwise have been sent to landfill or recycled are returned to full working order.

The workshop, at the Smugglers Way transfer station in Wandsworth, employs long-term job seekers as apprentices to be trained in electrical engineering and maintenance. The grant comes through the Masonic Charitable Foundation, which is funded by Freemasons.

According to Groundwork, last year, the project’s 29 paid trainees refurbished and sold over 4,500 domestic appliances and 2,700 items of furniture.  The repaired items are provided for resale through charity retailers in London and across the country.

London Freemason’s David Lawrence, said: “We’re very pleased to be able to support this excellent scheme which provides practical training for long-term unemployed people, helps the environment and provides a cheap source of refurbished appliance for charities to sell.”

Ben Coles, director at Groundwork London, added: “We’re very grateful to London Freemasons for their generous grant which will help us continue giving people the skills to find jobs in the capital’s growing retrofit sector.”

West Norfolk Recycling Rewards has awarded £3,000 to three local charities, as part of a recycling scheme.

Rewards: (l-r) Almaz Gaere (West Norfolk Recycling Rewards), David Shaw (West Norfolk Mind), Debbie Crown (Scotty’s Little Soldiers), Jessica Walker (The Norfolk Hospice), and Councillor Ian Devereux (Portfolio Holder for Environment)

West Norfolk Recycling Rewards launched to all households in the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk in May 2016 and has since been encouraging householders to recycle more and waste less.

As part of the scheme, residents receive individual and community rewards for better recycling practises. The communities that earn the most Green Points every six months win the biggest donations for a local charity.

Members of the scheme voted for their favourite local charities to receive a share of the £3,000 donation. Norfolk Hospice won the top prize of £1,500, and West Norfolk Mind and Scotty’s Little Soldiers were both awarded £750 each.

Ian Devereux, borough council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk cabinet member for environment, who presented the winning charities with their cheques said over 3,700 households had signed up to the scheme. He added: “It’s fantastic that the West Norfolk Recycling Rewards scheme is motivating residents to recycle more, and provides support for local charities in the local community at the same time.”

Smurfit Kappa has encouraged residents and businesses to bring their unwanted cardboard and paper to a dedicated charity skip located outside the company’s recycling depot on the Whitebirk Industrial Estate.

The company said it will then make a cash donation for every tonne of cardboard and paper material that is put into the skip.

East Lancashire Hospice serves the population of Blackburn, Darwen and Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley and offers many different services for the people with life-limiting illnesses.

East Lancashire Hospice fundraising manager, Sharon Crymble said: “We are extremely grateful to Smurfit Kappa for providing us with a means to raise funds and urge our community to take advantage of the new recycling scheme that is free to use, and at the same provides much-needed funds that go back into helping local people at a time when they need it.”

Ian Ledson, general manager, Smurfit Kappa Recycling in Blackburn, added: “We are extremely proud to be supporting East Lancashire Hospice with our recycling scheme.”
