And, commenting on publication of the SUEZ first half results, Mr Camus also said that his ambition for the business, which has its headquarters in Paris, was to become “the world leader in environmental services, contributing to a more sustainable planet. Our business and expertise are central to the challenges of our times, especially sustainability and climate change.”

The first half results saw the Paris-headquartered business report revenues of 8.6 million Euros. It operates primarily in the water, wastewater and waste and recycling sectors.

The results also mark the first financial report by Mr Camus who succeeded the long-serving Jean-Louis Chaussade in May this year.

UK division

The UK division, whose performance is tucked in with Scandinavia, posted “organic growth” of 4.2%, an increase of 23 million Euros. In contrast, France recorded growth of just 0.9% although price increases for commercial and industrial customers in Germany and Benelux saw profits jump by 8.9%.

Within Europe, the volume of waste handled by SUEZ businesses rose by 0.2% with a forecast for yearly growth of 1.5%.

Greater Manchester

In terms of the UK, SUEZ noted that its contract with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority has a revenue of 780 million Euros per annum. This is equivalent to about £710 million annually at current exchange rates. The company said the contract involves the management of about 1.1 million tonnes of waste produced by approximately 2.3 million inhabitants. The contract is for seven years, started on 1 June 2019, and has the possibility of a three then five-year extension.

SUEZ also highlighted that its UK division is preferred bidder for a contract to roll out a new household waste recycling service starting in 2020 for Somerset. This will have a revenue of c243 million Euros for the initial 10-year term with a potential 10-year extension.

Thailand

Other SUEZ highlights on the recycling front include: the opening of a light packaging sorting centre in Olbronn, Germany; and the construction of a recycling plant for plastic waste producing recycled material at Bang Phli, on the eastern outskirts of Bangkok.
