The 42 organisations were issued with a stars status certificate and a plaque at a ceremony at London’s Glaziers Hall on 8 December, hosted by BBC political correspondent Ben Wright.

Run by letsrecycle.com and supported by facilities management firm Helistrat and recycling and waste management company WasteCare, the Investors in Zero Waste scheme recognises good practice in the field of sustainable resource and waste management.

Established in 2010 as the Zero Waste Awards, over 500 organisations – ranging from businesses through to councils and hospitals – have now been recognised for their work in this area.

The latest entries were assessed by a judging panel which included letsrecycle.com editor Steve Eminton, Jacob Hayler, executive director of the Environmental Services Association (ESA) and Dr Adam Read, practice director at Ricardo Environment & Energy.

Labelling

Amongst those to be recognised at last week’s ceremony were OPRL Ltd – which runs the on-pack recycling labelling initiative – which stood out for its work to promote product recyclability through labelling on consumer goods packaging.

Modular building manufacturer Portakabin also received praise having reached zero waste to landfill at its York factory in 2013, as well as implementing a range of waste prevention activities across its operations including a reduction in packaging on production materials and investing in new machinery to make resource use more efficient.

Work to reduce waste on the production of the popular TV soap opera Coronation Street also featured in the awards – which included a ban on disposable cups at ITV’s Trafford studios, replaced with porcelain mugs and reusable plastic beakers, as well as making the filming process 100% tapeless.

Action

Commenting on the 2016 entries, Mr Eminton said: “What is exciting about the entries is that they show how thinking about recycling and good waste management practice is now being turned into action. The results that the entrants have reported show how a coherent approach to waste management brings benefits all round.”

Mr Hayler added: “Investors in Zero Waste is an important scheme for organisations from all different sectors to put the waste hierarchy into practice. There was a fantastic range of different initiatives and projects all of which championed making better use of our resources.”
