Biffa has been awarded a waste and cleansing contract with the Isle of Anglesey – Ynys Mon – county council, which is valued at £100 million.
The waste management giant has been delivering recycling and waste related services for the council since 2012, and its current deal expires in April 2021.
Biffa has held the contract with Anglesey since 2012
In July 2019, the council voted against a proposal to move the service in-house and instead chose to re-procure a contract. The new contract, which means Biffa will continue working on the Welsh island, will run for an initial eight years, with the option to extend it up to a maximum of 12 years.
This was initially valued by the authority at an estimated £80 million over the full 20 years but was awarded to Biffa — the only bidder — for a total of £100 million.
Services under the contract include the collection and disposal of household waste and recycling, the provision of refuse vehicles and other services such as litter collection and graffiti removal.
Collection services
Under the current system, Anglesey separates its recycling into six bins with a red bin for mixed paper and cardboard, a blue bin for plastics bottles and cans, an orange box for glass and a separate food waste, garden waste and electrical collections.
The new contracts includes:
- Weekly kerbside sort collection of household dry recyclables from households
- Weekly segregated collection of household food waste from households
- Fortnightly separate collection of household green waste
- three-weekly collection of household residual waste from households
- three-weekly separate collection of household nappy waste from all “relevant household customers”
Residual waste is sent to Wheelabrator’s Parc Adfer energy from waste site in Deeside. The council, which serves around 70,000 residents, recorded a 69.9% recycling rate in 2019.
