WRAP’s Shrewsbury becomes insights director

Ms Shrewsbury was previously head of government and communities at the resources charity.
In her new role, she will oversee the teams that deliver “crucial research and insights which underpin so much of WRAP’s work”.
Ms Shrewsbury will also oversee those that deliver technical support to local authorities, and management of grant programmes.
“I’m extremely proud to work for WRAP and of the incredible work we do,” she said.
Ms Shrewsbury added: “I’m very excited to be taking on this new role. My priority is to ensure that my brilliant teams continue to deliver work which is relevant, impactful, and delivers real change on the ground.”

‘Industry topliner’ joins Reconomy management team
Mr Butler spent 10 years at outsourced waste and resource management specialists, SWRnewstar,
Reconomy has announced that the former chief executive of outsourced waste and resource business SWRnewstar, Andy Butler has joined the group’s management team.
Previously, Mr Butler had spent 10 years at outsourced waste specialists, SWRnewstar, which was acquired by Biffa in 2019.
As chief executive he built revenues from £5 million to £45 million before the acquisition took place, said a statement from Reconomy. Mr Butler joins Reconomy on 1 April as part of the development of the group management team.
Commenting, Andy Butler said: “The thing what excites me most about joining Reconomy is that the business really does mirror my own business philosophy: great people with great relationships, focused on delivering to the highest possible standards and harnessing the disruptive power of technology to deliver great results for all stakeholders.”
Reconomy chief executive, Paul Cox, added: “This is a real coup for Reconomy. Andy has a fantastic track record and wealth of experience in our industry, and we’ve admired his achievements with SWRnewstar for some time.”
Ward bolsters its special projects team with Heather Foo
Midlands-based metal recycling and waste management specialist, Ward, has further strengthened its senior management team with the appointment of Heather Foo as general manager within its special projects team.

The announcement comes as the business looks to support the growth of its special projects division, which has a nationwide focus on providing services to large-scale demolition, construction, industrial clearance and land remediation projects.
Ward said that Ms Foo brings “substantial industry experience to the team. She joins from construction specialist Aggregate Industries where she was based for 20 years, fulfilling multiple roles.”
She, said: “I’m excited to have joined Ward, particularly when the business is so keenly focused on growth of the special projects team, I’m really eager to be part of driving that strategy forward.”
David Ward, commercial director at Ward, said: “It’s great to welcome Heather on board, especially at a time when we are realising our ambitions to develop the special projects team. We have significant capability in supporting contractors with demolition, land remediation, site clearance and decommissioning projects across the UK.”
Promotion and a return at DS Smith
James Kenward, business development lead UK
Packaging and recycling business DS Smith has announces two appointments.
After spending four years as a commercial manager at DS Smith, James Kenward has been appointed business development lead for recycling in the UK. Reporting to Dan Prosser, UK business development & fibre procurement director, Mr Kenward will be responsible for sourcing fibre for DS Smith’s recycling operations across the UK.
He has been recognised in Letsrecycle’s 35-under-35 awards programme and is also a fully chartered waste manager.
Mr Kenward said: “I am excited to join the business development team at a time when recycling has never been so high up on the agenda for both consumers and organisations. I look forward to working with business and local authorities to drive circular economy principles.”
Mike Harrison, managing director recycling, southern Europe
And for DS Smith on the Continent, the company has announced the appointment of Mike Harrison as managing director of recycling in southern Europe. He will be responsible for Recycling Operations across Italy, Iberia and France.
With over 20 years’ experience in the sector, Mike re-joins DS Smith from Suez Trading Europe, where he was recovered paper market director.
In a statement, DS Smith said: “Prior to this Mike spent over five successful years at DS Smith, holding senior recycling roles in both Europe and North America. Based in DS Smith’s offices in Paris, Mr Harrison will bring his significant experience to the role and is responsible for managing a portfolio of around two million tonnes of recycled paper and cardboard for DS Smith and its third party mill network.”
Bright Green Plastics welcomes 37 recruits
Among the new roles, Jayne Graham has been appointed as head of compliance
Yorkshire-based plastics recycling firm Bright Green Plastics has said its created over 30 jobs at its Castleford site since the beginning of 2021.
The company— which employs which employs 130 people to reprocess more than 40,000 tonnes of plastic waste each year— says the new roles will help support the “rapid growth of the business, off the back of several significant contract wins”.
Among the new roles, Jayne Graham has been appointed as head of compliance, having previously held roles with uPVC recycling company, Eurocell Recycle.
Andrew Davidson, formerly part of Suez’s pollution control team, joins as engineering maintenance supervisor.
A further two new engineers, 26 site operatives and four forklift operators have also been hired.
Steve Spencer, managing director, said: “We’ve had a fantastic start to the year, and are delighted to welcome so many new faces across every department of our business. From those with high-calibre industry experience to fresh, emerging talent, we couldn’t be happier with our army of new recruits”.
Topolytics announces four ‘key hires’
Edinburgh-based waste-technology firm, Topolytics, has announced four new key hires, bringing its team up to 12, as it continues its growth plans on the back of what is said was a successful 2019/20.
Michael Lloyd joins as chief product officer. Recently he has had subsequently taken senior roles with Scottish tech startups such a Qikserve and SnapDragon-IP.
Mike Groves, Topolytics CEO, has welcomed the new recruits
Chris Greening, has joined a head of engineering, with experience in mobile telecoms, retail banking, fintech, e-commerce and mobile app development.
Michael Antczak has been appointed as senior front-end software engineer, after contracting with Topolytics and having studied and worked at the University of Edinburgh. Michael is also a leading light in the Scottish REACT community.
Kenneth Porter joins Topolytics as a data scientist and has previously worked in environmental regulation.
Topolytics has been working with Defra (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) to use WasteMap to create a digital waste regulation system for the UK, analysing the hundreds of millions of regulated waste movements around the country each year.
Dr Michael Groves, CEO at Topolytics said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to attract four strong and experienced professionals into Team Topo. They will play a vital role in moving the company forward as we take WasteMap and associated analytics into new markets globally.”
