WasteAid launches Christmas jumper scheme

By 29/11/2016News

The charity WasteAid UK is launching a festive fundraiser scheme to help people reduce their environmental impact through buying a secondhand, rather than new, Christmas jumper. UPDATE: December 2 – the scheme is now open with jumpers available and WasteAid are asking for more jumpers to be offered at www.wasteaid.org.uk.

Zoë Lenkiewicz of WasteAid UK explained that research by the Love Your Clothes campaign had found that more than 10 million people might buy a Christmas jumper which will only be worn once or twice.

Global

Ms Lenkiewicz added: “The revenue generated from the sale of Christmas jumpers in the UK last year was £300 million.

“At WasteAid we thought some of that money could be better spent helping tackle the global waste crisis, so we’ve launched the Happy Christmas Jumper Swap.”

waste_aid_graphicMoney raised by the Christmas jumper scheme will be used to support the work of WasteAid UK. The organisation notes that “half the world’s waste doesn’t get collected, and open dumping and burning is damaging to people’s health and the environment they depend upon.”

A link to the WasteAid Christmas jumper scheme will be placed on the charity’s website soon, once the number of jumpers available has risen. People with jumpers to swap give WasteAid UK their details and make a £10 Justgiving donation. The person with the jumper then sends it to the person who has made the donation.

Mike Webster, director of WasteAid UK, said: “WasteAid is the waste management sector’s response to the global waste crisis.

“Running for just over a year, we have worked with partners in nine countries, developed 34 community recycling facilities, trained 363 recycling entrepreneurs and positively impacted the lives of 124,000 people.”

And, he added that “more partners in developing countries are waiting to work with WasteAid. All that is needed is the funding.”
