By 12/04/2021News

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) has paid tribute to Prince Philip — who held an honorary fellowship for over 50 years — following his death on Friday (9 April) aged 99.

HRH Duke of Edinburgh was linked to the waste sector throughout his career through a number of plant visits and openings and attending the Futuresource conference and exhibition in 2009 run by CIWM and the Environmental Services Association (ESA). It was at this event that he marked his 50 years of CIWM honorary fellowship.

At the exhibition the Duke attended a special lunch with key waste industry figures before being shown around the large exhibition space.

In a statement, the CIWM said it was “saddened” to hear of the Duke’s passing, and added that his recognition of frontline waste workers during the pandemic “meant a great deal” to its members.

‘Remarkable life’

The full statement from the CIWM said: “We were saddened to learn of the passing of CIWM Honorary Fellow, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, this morning. We were honoured to receive His Royal Highness, who held an Honorary Fellowship of CIWM for over 50 years, at our Future Resource conference in 2009 and his recent recognition of the work of frontline waste and resource professionals during the Covid-19 pandemic meant a great deal to our members.

“Throughout his remarkable life, he remained committed to raising awareness of environmental concerns and the responsibility we each have to protect the natural environment.”

One of the plant visits that he made came in 2010 when the Duke formally opened the Lakeside Energy from Waste (EfW) facility in Berkshire, which is operated as a joint venture by Grundon and Viridor.

At the ceremony the Duke toured the site and unveiled a commemorative plaque in front of guests who included the Japanese ambassador.

Here he showed his humorous approach to life, remarking that the plant would tell him in the mornings which way the wind was blowing when he looked out of his window at the nearby Windsor Castle.
