Steel recycling in Europe ‘hits record high’

By 29/06/2018News

APEAL, the association of European producers of steel for packaging has released new figures showing that recycling of steel packaging across Europe has reached an all-time high of 79.5%.

APEAL’s 2016 report, on data collected in 2015, showed a 2% increase in recycling. The report also shows a 5.5% increase since 2012, and almost a 20% rise since 2004. The 2018 figures show a “new all-time high recycling rate for steel packaging”, said APEAL.

Alexis Van Maercke, secretary general of APEAL, said: “Steel is a permanent material which means it can be recycled forever with no loss of quality. Its unique barrier properties also mean that food packed in steel has the equivalent vitamin content to freshly prepared food, without needing preserving agents.

“Steel is already the most recycled packaging in Europe and the latest figures show just how close we are to reaching the industry’s self-imposed target of 80% by 2020 which is thanks in no small part to the concerted efforts of the industry, supply chain and ultimately, responsible action by consumers.”

Progress

Mr Van Maercke added, “The new record recycling rate for steel packaging confirms steel is Europe’s most recycled packaging material for the twelfth consecutive year. It shows that a truly circular economy which reduces waste, saves resources and closes the material loop is well within reach.”

In 2017, the UK processed or exported 108,000 metric tons of steel packaging, which was an increase of 4000 metric tons. In addition, the UK also processed or exported 23, 000 metric tons of aluminium packaging.
