Saica to build £50 million West Lothian plant

The Saica Group has announced its intention to establish a £50 million purpose-built packaging production facility in Livingstone, West Lothian.

Within its packaging division Saica Pack, the move will see the de-commissioning of the company’s Edinburgh and Milngavie sites to one main plant in Livingstone.

According to a statement from Saica Pack, the facility is being built in response to changes in customer demand, ageing facilities and challenges associated with existing site locations.

This “led the company to take a major step in order to increase Saica Pack´s capacity and offering for its customers”, the statement added.

The construction of a the plant that will boost Saica Pack’s capacity, the Spanish firm stated, as well as increasing its offering to the Scottish market.

Saica Pack has said it hopes the new site will be completed by the end of 2021.

“This new site gives us the capacity to invest further in the future as we want to remain a leading provider of corrugated packaging in Scotland and enhance our offering to our customers”, he explained.

‘Strategically planned’

The ‘strategically planned’ transition period, according to Saica, will ensure there will be no disruption for customers. as the company maintains operations at its two current operating units in Scotland.

Saica’s Grangemouth Sheet Plant will be unaffected by this announcement.

New roles at the Livingston site will be filled by existing staff members and the firm said it will  be “working alongside its much-valued members of staff at the two existing sites”.

Saica Group says it is one of the largest European players in the development and production of recycled paper for corrugated board, with a production of  3,2 million tonnes of paper across Europe per year.
