Recycling campaign to partner cycling event

By 23/04/2018News

A drinks can recycling campaign has been named as the 2018 recycling partner for both the OVO Energy Women’s Tour and the OVO Energy Tour Series.

Every Can Counts, which is run by the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (ALUPRO), said today that as partner of top level  cycling events, it will be encouraging those who participate in competitive and recreational cycling in the UK and Europe to recycle their drinks cans when they are out.

The can recycling scheme is working with SweetSpot Group, the organisation behind both the OVO Energy Women’s Tour and Tour Series, to help provide its audience with an environmentally friendly outlook.

Tour of Britain

Relaunched in 2004 after a five-year absence from the calendar, the OVO Energy Tour Series, which is also known as the Tour of Britain, attracts the world’s top cyclists including Olympic and World Champions and Tour de France stage winners.

Previous winners of the event include Bradley Wiggins and Steve Cummings.

Rick Hindley, executive director of Alupro, explained that the high-profile event provides a great opportunity to raise awareness of “recycling benefits”.

Mr Hindley said: “We are increasingly aware that recycling packaging is something simple we can all do to help protect the environment. Collectively the women’s stage race and the event series attracted over half a million visitors in 2017 and with higher audience figures expected this year; it gives us a great platform to shout about the benefits of recycling aluminium packaging and the Every Can Counts programme.”

Recycling points

With 47% of cans being drunk ‘on the go’ and outside of the home; Alupro said  both the OVO events provide an opportunity for the recycling campaign to encourage and educate the general public, cyclists and cycling fans, on recycling their aluminium goods.

Alupro will provide recycling points, which can be set up at each stage of the respective events, as well as branding on drinks cans that are used at the event.
