O’Donovan Waste rolls out ‘remote controlled skips’

By 10/08/2020News

Skip hire company O’Donovan Waste Disposal has announced improvements in its safety operations, with a new remote control system for its fleet of skip loaders.

The  system enables drivers to watch from the rear or side and move around throughout the process

Using remote controlled hand-held control panels, the company says that the fleet drivers can now walk and observe operations from a vantage point.

This enables its drivers to watch from the rear or side and move around throughout the process, maintaining a “safe distance whilst the skip is being lifted so the all-round safety of the operation is ensured”.

The company said: “Feedback from drivers has been extremely positive with many commenting the remote control system is easy to use, safe and efficient.

“The industry is marching on and becoming more innovative and technological which will hopefully encourage new talent into the sector. Something that is very much needed with the average age of an HGV driver in the UK being 54.”

Sheeting

The remote control allows drivers to maintain a safe distance from the skip

The company added that the system, coupled with the automated sheeting system, has made the collection of full skips safer.

Jacqueline O’Donovan, managing director at the company said: “The improvement in safety is substantial. The risk factor associated with collecting or exchanging skips has been significantly reduced.”

The company confirmed in July that it has actually seen an “increase in business” during the pandemic, and ran out of skips.

The family run business has a fleet of 100 HGV’s and 55 skip loaders.
