ISL Waste named WISHNI Ambassador
Belfast-based ISL Waste has been named as a WISHNI Ambassador for its health and safety practices and to promote better safety standards within the waste industry in the region.

The title has been awarded by the Waste Industry Safety and Health Forum for Nothern Ireland (WISHNI). It recognises ISL’s health and safety management activity at its base in Mallusk and remote stations across Northern Ireland.
Barry Donaghy, director at ISL said the company was ‘delighted’ to be awarded the title, and added: “Health and safety is critical to what we do because of the nature of the work we do. We are committed to protecting the health and safety of everyone involved – our employees, clients and anyone else affected by our works.”
“We work proactively with all our clients and staff to implement the highest possible Health and Safety standards on all of our sites and in all of our facilities.”
The director said: “This award is a great testament to the continued dedication of the ISL Waste Management team.”
ISL health and safety welfare officer Renata Deignan concluded: “As a WISHNI Ambassador, ISL will continue to focus on health and safety within our business and to promote best practice with both staff and clients. It is our aim to lead by example within the Northern Ireland waste industry.”

Blue Scotland to showcase recycling equipment at open day
Recycling equipment supplier Blue Scotland will be holding a Waste Recycling Open Day at its site in Bonnybridge on 11-12 May.

The open day will consist of tours of Blue Scotland’s new facility, as well as a look at a number of the new static machines at the site, including the Warrior 1400 with Apron feeder, the Chieftain 2200, the Doppstadt SM Trommel and Fuchs Material Handlers.
From there the group will travel to Central Demolition where 10 pieces of Blue Machinery equipment will be on live display including: Fuchs Material Handlers, Powerscreen Washing Plant, BlueMAC C&D Waste Recycling Plant, Powerscreen 1000 Maxtrak Mobile Cone Crusher, EvoQuip Bison 120 Compact Jaw Crusher and new Cobra 230 Impactor, Powerscreen Premiertrak R400 Mobile Jaw Crusher, Doppstadt AK510 K High Speed Shredder and Doppstadt DW 3060 F Type.
Following the ‘live’ display tour, the group will move to a venue close by for refreshments.

CIWM’s Church visits Viridor’s Beddington ERF
Colin Church, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM) has visited Viridor’s Beddington Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) construction site in south London last week.

During the visit Dr Church heard how Viridor works with the South London Waste Partnership to manage the non-recyclable waste for around one million homes.
Viridor is supporting the SLWP’s landfill diversion strategy by constructing the £205m ERF. The ERF is the latest part of the company’s £1.5bn investment in waste infrastructure.
Dr Church said: “A facility like the Beddington ERF offers clear benefits for energy generation along with landfill diversion and is an important step in the right direction, but it must also be accompanied by a firm focus on waste prevention and recycling.”
Dan Cooke, director of regulatory affairs for Viridor said: “Every day Viridor puts waste into action, safely managing over 7 million tonnes last year, moving unwanted material up the waste hierarchy to be reused by manufacturers. However alongside reducing the amount of waste we produce there is still material that cannot be recycled. The Beddington ERF will transform this into enough energy for around 30,000 homes.”

B&M awarded health and safety accolade
B&M Waste Services has won the Gold award at the annual Health and Safety Awards 2017, run by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
The company will be presented with the award during a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole hotel on July 12.
The RoSPA awards scheme is open to businesses and organisations of all types from across the UK and overseas, and is judged on entrants’ overarching occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.
Ann McMurrie, EQHSC Manager, said: “We are proud to announce that we have achieved the prestigious RoSPA Gold Award. I can’t thank the staff enough for participating and ensuring the health and safety culture is second to none.”

Repic runs Moray WEEE competition
Community groups, schools and good causes in Moray are being given the chance to win £500 worth of vouchers to buy new electrical products as part of responsible recycling initiative.
The initiative is aimed at capturing more waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)
The Powering Communities campaign is being run by Repic, the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) producer compliance scheme.
Moray Council’s waste management officer, Steve Williamson, said: “This initiative is a great opportunity to bring further benefit to communities and to encourage responsible recycling.”
Repic chief executive Mark Burrows-Smith said: “We are proud to have collected and treated over two million tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment to date and we hope that the Powering Communities campaign will encourage people to think about responsibly recycling their old electricals, particularly when they purchase new ones.”
