Whitham Mills wins baler order in Italy

A Manchester waste management equipment manufacturer has won an order to supply AMUT Group with baling machinery.

The GB7575 fully automatic balers

Whitham Mills will provide Italian plastics processer AMUT group with two GB7575 fully automatic balers. The equipment produces bales weighing in at over 300kgs and processes more than six tonnes of waste per hour.

The balers will be installed at a plastics recycling centre in Redcar which specialises in handling PET and HDPE bottles. The customer is one of the UK’s leading recycling companies, exporting around 440,000 tonnes of baled mixed recycling every year.

Whitham Mill’s equipment will be used at the end of the waste line to bale materials which cannot be recycled. These bales will then be sent to the incineration plant for thermal treatment and recovery of the heat generated through combustion.

The deal is the largest export order the company has made for 2019 and comes as Whitham Mills celebrates twenty years of trading.

WRAP opens collection vehicle consultation

WRAP has opened a consultation asking local authorities how it can best help them with the procurement of collection vehicles.

The WRAP survey will inform the support offered to councils

The survey – which is fully supported by the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) – will inform the support WRAP offers to councils as they adopt the proposals on how recyclables should be collected from 2023.

These changes are part of the consistency measures set out in the Resources and Waste Strategy.

Respondents are asked how they collect kerbside recycling and what type of vehicles they use for these collections. WRAP is also enquiring as to what sort of businesses supply the vehicles and how they are paid for.

The survey is only looking for respondents from English local authorities.

Adler and Allan launch rebrand

Environmental risk reduction firm Adler &Allan has rebranded to “better reflect their expanded range of services”.

The shake-up has seen the company, which specialises in environmental clean-up operations, launch a new brand and logo which will benefit customers by offering “a more comprehensive set of solutions from one customer focused team”.

The company has also developed a suite of new employee values. These were developed in-house by a cross section of employees across different parts of the business to “ensure they reflect the key priorities”.

Bob Contreras, group chairman at Adler and Allan, said: “I am really excited to be entering the next phase of our journey. The new brand and employee values will unite the business, giving us one common purpose, which will benefit our customers in many ways.”

Mr Contreras added the new branding would be rolled out gradually. “Where we do need to replace physical items such as van livery and PPE this will be done when the item is worn out. Afterall, we are an environmental company so we wouldn’t just throw something away that is still usable.”

The business has its head office in Harrogate and more than 20 depots across the UK.

Henshaw set to chair Natural Resources Wales

Wales Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths, has announced that Sir David Henshaw is the Welsh Government’s preferred candidate to become the chair of Natural Resources Wales (NRW).

Sir David is currently NRW’s interim Chair and has been in post since 1 November 2018.

Before the chair of NRW is formally appointed, the National Assembly’s Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs Committee will hold a pre-appointment hearing on 26 September to take evidence from Sir David as the preferred candidate.

Sir David’s announcement as the preferred candidate follows a “fair and open” recruitment exercise regulated by the Commission for Public Appointments.

Natural Resources Wales is the largest Welsh Government Sponsored Body – employing 1,900 staff across Wales with a budget of £180 million – and has a range of functions including environmental regulation akin to the work of the Environment Agency in England.
