MRF operators take top board posts at Resource Association

By 31/05/2017News

Following its annual meeting last week, the Resource Association has announced that Robbie Warden of UPM, which has a paper mill and a modern materials recycling facility in north Wales, has been elected chair.

Robbie Warden of UPM has been elected chair of the Resource Association

And the new vice-chair of the association is Eric Randall, a director of Northern Ireland’s Bryson Recycling which takes materials from seven local authorities, including Belfast, for sorting at its MRF in Mallusk. The social enterprise also operates in Conwy, Wales.

Mr Warden, who is national sourcing manager for UPM, succeeds Peter Clayson of DS Smith.

Separate

The association has argued in favour of more separate collection of recyclables – in January this year it called for “more focus on quality, consistency and separate collection on the journey to higher packaging recycling”.

The quality message was taken up by Mr Warden in his first address to the association. Mr Warden promised that it would “continue to press hard with the message that high quality recycling is essential for the health and sustainability of UK reprocessing and manufacturing.”

And, he said he would “particularly like to thank Peter Clayson for his service. He has been a well-respected and strong chair and leaves big boots to fill. I’m delighted to be able to call on Peter and colleagues on the Board as we develop our recently agreed new Business Plan and continue to press hard with the message that high quality recycling is essential for the health and sustainability of UK reprocessing and manufacturing. I also look forward to working with our executive team of Ray Georgeson, Carole Saul and Michal Len in the coming year.”

Honour

Mr Clayson said it had been a “huge honour” to lead the Resource Association as chair and I am grateful to the Board and the executive team for their unstinting support. These haven’t been easy times for the recycling and reprocessing industries, but we have continued to make the case for quality recycling, more consistency in household collections and establishing the importance of reprocessor quality specifications, reminding the supply chain that high quality recycled products need consistency and quality in feedstock.”

The board of directors was also elected at the meeting, with Paldeep Bhatti of Kent Resource Partnership stepping up to the Board, replacing Sam Reeve of Resource Futures. Other board members for the coming year are:

  • Peter Clayson, DS Smith
  • Andy Doran, Novelis
  • Gero Hempel, Palm Recycling
  • Mandy Kelly of ACE-UK.
