During the summer, the British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) held a special ceremony at its headquarters in Huntingdon to unveil its newly created ‘Presidents Plaques’.

The plaques list all the Presidents of the different ferrous and non-ferrous associations and federations since 1920 that came together in 2001 to form the BMRA. These are: British Scrap Federation; British Metals Federation; National Association of Non-Ferrous Scrap Metal Merchants; and, the British Secondary Metals Association.

The plaques also name all the BMRA Directors-General and Robert Fell, the current chief executive.

The past Presidents who attended were: Robert Cooper TD (1984-1986), formerly of the Cooper Group later becoming European Metals Recycling; David Yendoll (1995-1996), formerly of Philip Metals; Tony Dodds (1994-1995) formerly of S. Sackers; Roger Brewster (1989-1990) formerly of Metal Interest; Tony Bird OBE (1979-1980), of The Bird Group; Peter Mathews CMG (1997-1999), of Black Country Metals; Colin Bedford (1987-1988) of Total Waste Management.

Current board members and past presidents, Shane Mellor (2014-2016) of Mellor Metals (celebrating 41 years of scrap on the day) and Graham Davy (2012-2014) of Intelligent Lifecycle Solutions also attended the ceremony alongside former Director General Lindsay Millington (2005-2008).

‘Delighted’

Robert Fell said: “I am delighted that some of the past Presidents were able to attend the ceremony and help us celebrate our long, albeit complex, history. It was an honour to meet some of the people who have helped shape the industry and enable the BMRA to become the Association it is today.

“I am also very grateful to our current President, Susie Burrage, for doing the honours and unveiling the plaques. We are waiting for a plaque listing the former Scottish Metals Association’s past Presidents to be completed and hope to unveil this shortly.”
