Defra made the announcement yesterday (May 22), explaining that the Queen “has been pleased to approve” the move, which will see Mr Rutley take over the role in addition to his current post as a government whip.

David Rutley was elected at the 2010 general election as MP for Macclesfield, having previously been a senior executive at supermarket ASDA.

He also worked as a special adviser in the last Conservative government at the treasury, the cabinet office and the ministry of agriculture.

Mr Rutley is also the co-chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on mountaineering and the vice chair of the APPG on national parks, as well as being a member of several other APPGs, including those on China, pharmaceuticals and small business.

Nigel Adams

The Defra statement also announced that Nigel Adams MP will be appointed parliamentary under secretary of state at the ministry of housing, communities and local government. Mr Adams has been appointed temporarily to provide support so Heather Wheeler MP can spend more time with her husband who has health issues.

The Defra statement noted: “The Queen has been pleased to approve that David Rutley MP and Nigel Adams MP be appointed parliamentary under secretaries of state at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government respectively.

“Both roles are unpaid and are in addition to their current roles as government whips.”

The statement concluded: “David Rutley MP has been appointed temporarily whilst Thérèse Coffey MP recovers from a period of illness.”
