Two fires broke out at waste and recycling facilities in Scotland yesterday (14 April), with plants owned by Viridor and Shore Recycling both having incidents. There were no reported casualties at either of the fires.

Viridor Glasgow

The first incident took place at Viridor’s energy recovery plant, called the Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre.

According to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, it was alerted at 12:28pm on Wednesday to reports of a fire affecting the facility. It said six appliances were mobilised and crews evacuate the premises and extinguished the fire at 4pm.

The fire occurred in the building’s ‘smart’ materials recycling facility (SMRF).

A spokesman for Viridor said: “A fire was reported at Viridor’s Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre (GRREC) at 12.20pm yesterday. Viridor staff alerted the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service and immediately implemented site safety procedures, evacuating the plant. There have been no injuries.

“The fire, which was in the Smart Materials Recycling Facility (S-MRF) at the GRREC and limited to the area around one of the shredders, was extinguished at approximately 4pm.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known. Viridor is grateful to the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service for its assistance.”

Shore Recycling

The second incident took place at a waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) facility owned by Shore Recycling in Perth.

The facility was acquired by Shore from Viridor last year (see letsrecycle.com story).

A spokesperson from the Scottish Fire Service said it was called at 3:19pm on the same day. Four appliances were deployed and the fire was extinguished shortly afterwards.

A spokesperson for Shore Recycling said: “We are pleased to confirm that nobody was injured during the incident. The fire was controlled due the prompt action of our employees and the support of the local fire brigade. Further environmental advice was provided on site by SEPA.

“No business interruption has been encountered and we continue to service HWRCs across Scotland as usual.”
