Defra to hold Brexit events across England

By 09/10/2019News

Members of the waste management industry are being invited to attend one of a series of free events across England about what leaving the EU will mean for the sector.

Waste operators are being advised to put contigency plans in place in the event of a no deal Brexit

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is holding five sessions at different locations across the country later this month ahead of the UK’s planned departure from the EU on October 31.

Focusing primarily on what leaving the EU without a deal could mean for stakeholders, the events will provide an update on the latest situation and next steps.

They follow a similar meeting held on October 3 in London, at which the department laid out its contingency plan for the waste sector and expressed confidence in sufficient landfill capacity post Brexit (see letsrecycle.com story).

At the London meeting, operators were advised to make a plan in case there is disruption at ports and to review their waste storage capacity in case they were required to store waste for longer.

Events

The events – in Bristol, Kent, Liverpool, York and Birmingham – will include a question and answer session, providing the opportunity for stakeholders to raise any concerns or seek further detail.

In an email to stakeholders, Defra said: “These events are being held across the country so that you can book the event that is most convenient for you. These events are similar to the stakeholder event which was held in London on 3 October.”

Running from 12.20pm to 2.25pm, the events will be held at:

21/10/2019      Mercure Bristol Holland House Hotel, Redcliff Hill, Bristol, BS1 6SQ

23/10/2019      Mercure Tunbridge Wells Hotel, 8 Tonbridge Road, Pembury, TN2 4QL

25/10/2019      Liverpool Novotel, 40 Hanover Street, Liverpool, L1 4LN

28/10/2019      York Park Inn, North Street, York, YO1 6JD

29/10/2019      Birmingham Copthorne Hotel, Paradise Circus, Birmingham, B3 3HJ

Questions

The Department is urging those interested to book their places via EventBrite, using the above links, by 14 October 2019. It is also urging attendees to submit any questions or issues they have about waste management and Brexit prior to the event.

It added that lunch will be provided and an agenda shared prior to the event.

To help make the most of the event, the Department is asking those planning to attend to submit any questions and issues they have around waste management and Brexit prior to the events. Questions should be sent to Waste-EUExit@defra.gov.uk by 14 October.

A full summary about importing and exporting waste in the event of a no-deal Brexit can be found on the Defra website.

Paper

The impact of a potential no-deal Brexit is also to be addressed at two upcoming events aimed specifically at the paper sector and funded by BEIS (the department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy).

Organised by the CPI— a trade association for the paper sector—the two events are due to take place in Warwickshire and Manchester later this month.

The events will take place on:

  • Tuesday 22 October from 10am to 1pm
Stoneleigh/Warwick Room, Chesford Grange Hotel, Kenilworth, Warwickshire CV8 2LD
  • Thursday 24 October from 10am to 1pm
Wanderers Suite, Bolton Whites Hotel, University of Bolton Stadium, Bolton, Greater Manchester BL6 6SF
