The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has today (29 November) outlined proposed recycling targets for paper, steel, aluminium and wood packaging up to 2020.

Three options have been outlined for the future of the targets, which include keeping them at 2017 levels through to the end of the decade or varying increases for different materials. Defra has indicated that it has no preferred option for future target levels.
2017 targets currently stand at 55% for aluminium, 76% for steel, 69.5% for paper, 22% for wood and 79% for recovery.
Proposals launched for consultation today include:

The existing business targets for 2013-17 were set in 2012, but further goals are required to be set to the end of the decade under the terms of the Packaging Directive, the overarching piece of EU legislation that requires Member States to encourage recycling of waste packaging.
Data
Future target rates have been proposed following the release of data into amount of paper and wood packaging placed onto the market – following research by Valpak and WRAP published in the summer (see letsrecycle.com story)
Targets for glass and plastic packaging have already been set up to 2020 – having been outlined by government in Budget 2016. These were amended after baseline data used to measure progress in packaging recycling had been updated.
Stakeholders have until midday on 6 January 2017 to respond to the consultation.
