Health and safety continues to be a key concern in the waste and recycling sector, with data published this year suggesting that waste workers are among those at the highest risk of harm across a number of industries.
This autumn, letsrecycle.com will bring together some of the leading figures in the waste and recycling industry at the Health and Safety conference in Leicester to debate the issue, showcase best practice and share guidance in improving health and safety across the sector.
letsrecycle.com is organising the one-day Health & Safety Conference in partnership with the WISH Forum
The conference, which will be held at Stamford Court, will feature presentations on key issues regarding legislation, case studies on behavioural change and driver safety along with practical advice on implementing a safety culture through effective communications.

The one-day event has been organised by letsrecycle.com in partnership with the HSE’s Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) Forum. It takes place on November 21 2018.
Speakers
As part of the event, speakers from across the UK waste industry will be sharing best practice, including representatives from the WISH Forum, Suez, Amey, FCC Environmnent, and others.
Chris Jones, chair of WISH, will open the event, discussing future developments in the industry, and changes the waste sector can expect to see.

Zoe Betts of leading law firm Pinsent Masons will also present during the first session, which will also include a talk on priorities for the waste sector, by providing an update on legislation and directors liability.
Commenting ahead of her talk, Ms Betts said: “Recently published fatality statistics have put the Waste Sector under the spotlight and firmly on the regulator’s radar. My session examines recent instances of corporate and personal liability for H&S breaches, whilst seeking to suggest that an improved management system, culture and leadership from the top could reduce the number of serious incidents within the sector.”
Sector specific
The one-day conference is aimed at those involved across the entire waste and recycling sector, including recycling and waste management officers, health and safety consultants, contractors and those working with waste management companies or local authorities.
The second session of the day will include two case studies from O’Donovan Waste Disposal and Biffa looking at behavioural safety and driver safety respectively.
Paul Wright, group health & safety director at Biffa, who will be presenting the case study, said: “The waste and recycling sector is a fundamental part of general industry and society. Regarded as one of the most hazardous, it is essential we ensure the safety of refuse workers and those we work around. I’ll be speaking about an industry and nationwide recognised initiative we have developed to raise awareness to reckless driving around refuse collection activities. Nick Curtis, HSEQ director at Amey, will also present a case study on managing aggressive clients at CA sites to round off the second session.
Other presentations will look at noise from glass collections, preventing hand injuries at MRFs and bioaerosols.
