Packaging and WEEE compliance scheme Clarity Environmental has announced a new partnership with assistance dog charity Hound for Heroes.

The agreement is part of Clarity’s pledge to donate at least 1% of its profits to good causes. Clarity has committed to donating at least £20,000 to the charity.

Hounds for Heroes provides specially trained assistance dogs to injured and disabled people from the emergency services and UK armed forces. The charity fully funds the food, insurance and veterinary costs for the working life of the dog.

Clarity will be funding a “squadron” of four puppies, who will first be trained before going on to offer support to someone suffering from an injury or disability.

David Honcoop – managing director of Clarity – said he looked forward to seeing the progress each of the puppies made and the impact they would have on someone’s life.

He commented: “With our two resident Labradors, the Clarity team fully understands the joys a dog can bring, but to be able to offer dogs that can also facilitate independence to a service man or woman, it is a pleasure to know that our donation could help.

“By supporting Hounds for Heroes we hope to use the success of our business to change one person’s life for the better.”

Training

Hounds for Heroes recruits eight puppies per year and fund the eight-week-old recruits through the 24 months it usually takes to train. It provides assessment and matching days, a two-week residential training course and aftercare support throughout the working life of the partnership.

“The original ethos of our charity was about the serving and ex-service community supporting their own injured and disabled colleagues.”

Allen Parton, Hounds for Heroes

The charity’s vice chair and founder, Allen Parton, was seriously injured whilst serving in the Royal Navy – he founded Hounds for Heroes so that injured personnel from the military and emergency services might receive the same help that his service dog, Endal, had given him.

He explained: “The original ethos of our charity was about the serving and ex-service community supporting their own injured and disabled colleagues.

“What we had totally under-estimated was the sheer level of support and backing that we would receive from the public. Having companies such as Clarity Environmental committing to support Hounds for Heroes over the next four years is incredibly humbling.”

Clarity’s sponsored puppies – Lance, Captain, Scout and Sergeant – are now beginning their journey as assistance dogs.
