Cawleys invests in fire prevention system

By 06/04/2017News

Bedfordshire-based waste management firm Cawleys has installed a fire detection and suppression system at its Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Luton.

The waste and resource recycling company provides waste management services for organisations across the UK.

The fire suppression system incorporates a range of technologies to detect and prevent major fires

The company said it is the first in the UK to install the PYROsmart Fire Detection and Foam Fire Suppression System within a building, as part of its ‘smart fire prevention’ procedure.

Under the system waste material entering the MRF’s reception area will be scanned using thermal imaging cameras which will detect ‘waste hotspots’.

These include materials accidentally disposed of in general waste, such as lithium batteries which are more likely to ignite, and have caused waste fires at other facilities across the country. Hotspots are then automatically targeted with fire-fighting foam, by foam cannons mounted above the waste streams.

Suppression

The system, installed by Helios Systems Limited, combines the Pyrosmart Fire Detection with Foam Fire Suppression System.

William Furniss, Cawleys health and safety manager, said: “At Cawleys, we have long been champions of innovation – and that extends to our health and safety culture. Our new smart fire prevention system will now be in action 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, identifying hotspots at early signs and tackling fire outbreaks before they can spread.

“When we learnt about the PYROsmart system we were very impressed with its capabilities and by adding the foam fire suppression, we have offered even more assurance that should a fire break out, we have the equipment on site to deal with it instantly.”

According to Cawleys, the PYROsmart heat detection system with foam fire suppression will help the company meet the Environment Agency’s new Fire Prevention Plan (FPP) guidance.

The system consists of a sensitive infrared thermal imaging camera and a video camera. A pan and tilt drive constantly scans radiometric high-resolution data of the area being monitored. The recorded data is converted to a detailed thermographic panoramic image.

Mr Furniss said: “PYROsmart really does give us peace of mind that our site is now monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year, providing early identification of any hot spots should they occur. By adding the foam fire suppression system as well we know we can tackle any hotspots or fires that are identified before they spread.”
