Bryson Recycling has won a three-year deal worth £12.6 million to continue processing dry recyclables from six councils in Northern Ireland.
The contract was procured by arc21, the umbrella waste management group for local authorities in the east of Northern Ireland.
As part of the deal, Bryson Recycling – a social enterprise which forms part of the Bryson Charitable Group – will process dry recyclables and separately collected glass from more than 250,000 households at its materials recycling facility in Mallusk, Newton Abbey.

ARC21 is a local government body tasked with coordination of the waste management services for: Antrim and Newtonabbey borough council; Ards and North Down borough council; Belfast city council; Lisburn and Castlereagh city council; Mid and East Antrim borough, and; Newry Mourne and Down district council.
In 2017/18, it recorded a 48.4% recycling rate.
Jobs
Eric Randall, director of Bryson Recycling, said he looks forward to continuing the work the company has started when it first signed the contract in 2016.
“We are delighted to have won this contract which secures the jobs of over 100 staff at Bryson and demonstrates that social enterprises can deliver high quality, efficient and cost-effective public services.
“We currently process recyclable materials collected from 55% of Northern Ireland’s homes and look forward to continuing to help councils and residents recycle as much as possible. We focus on producing high quality materials that can be recycled locally; over 88% of the materials we process through this contract will be recycled in the UK, helping to support local jobs and the economy”.

This was echoed by acting chief executive of arc21, Tim Walker, who said: “After much interest from waste management firms, it’s great that we’ve been able to award this contract.
“We’re really pleased to see the current focus on quality recycling and the positive contribution this will make to jobs in the region. We look forward to continuing our long-standing arrangements with Bryson and wish them well in delivering this contract.”
In March 2016, Bryson first signed a 12 month agreement for £15 million (see letsrecycle.com story), which was later extended.
