Biffa completes acquisition of Viridor assets

By 01/09/2021News

Waste management company Biffa has today (1 September) completed the £126 million deal to acquire Viridor’s collections business and some recycling assets.

The acquisition was first announced in May 2021 (see letsrecycle.com story) and includes three waste transfer stations in Edinburgh, Sheffield and Cornwall, 15 depots across the country and ‘wet waste depots’ in Slough, Thurrock and Taunton.

It also includes four material recycling facilities (MRFs) in Ford, West Sussex; Plymouth; Milton Keynes; and Masons, Ipswich; three composting facilities in Priorswood, Walpole and Dimmer; and an anaerobic digestion plant in Walpole. Viridor’s Crayford MRF, it’s energy from waste portfolio and its plastics recycling division is not included.

The Crayford facility was excluded due to potential concerns around competition. There are relatively few MRFs in London and Biffa already has a large MRF at Edmonton. The Crayford one is even larger, with the capacity to process around 250,000 tonnes of waste per annum.

The acquisition… is another significant step for Biffa

‘Significant step’

Michael Topham, chief executive of Biffa, said the deal would accelerate the company’s strategy

Michael Topham, chief executive of Biffa, commented: “The acquisition of Viridor’s collections business and certain recycling assets is another significant step for Biffa, strengthening our leadership positions in a number of our core markets and accelerating the delivery of our growth strategy as we continue to leverage the Group’s unique position at the heart of the circular economy.

“On behalf of everyone at Biffa, I’m delighted to officially welcome our new Viridor colleagues to the business and look forward to working together as we continue to pursue the exciting growth opportunities that lie ahead.”

Customer

Biffa said today that the acquisition will expand its industrial and commercial collections business and recycling capabilities, “broadening the group’s customer base, and solidifying its leading position in UK sustainable waste management”.

The waste management giant added that the deal “builds on Biffa’s strong track record as the leading consolidator of the highly fragmented UK I&C collections market and underpins the group’s commitment to its sustainability strategy, strengthening Biffa’s position as one of the largest recyclers of post-consumer materials in the UK”.

The acquired Viridor business has “traded in line with expectations” since 21 May 2021.
