UKWSL appoints new managing director
Waste and recycling brokerage, UKWSL, has announced the appointment of Max Kanda as managing director from the 1 April 2017.

Mr Kanda, who was previously director of corporate affairs, has been with UKWSL for five years. Mr Kanda previously held a number of senior positions with waste and recycling companies including SITA UK, Biffa and Greenstar.
The company’s founders Garry Johnson and Chris Giscombe will assume the roles of chairmen in the organisation. A new senior management board to support Mr Kanda will be announced in due course.
Commenting on the new appointment, Chris Giscombe, UKWSL managing director said:
“Garry and I have worked closely with Max to set out a five-year strategy taking us through to 2021 and although the targets set are very challenging we are confident that under Max’s leadership that there are attainable.
“We feel the time is right for us to take on a new role focusing on setting the style, tone and direction of the business and have empowered Max and his Senior Management Team to spearhead the running of the business and delivery of our strategy.”

Francesca Cameron joins Recolight

WEEE compliance scheme Recolight has announced the appointment of Francesca Cameron to develop the scheme’s lamp collection network.
The new position has been created to promote the free lamp collection and recycling service offered by Recolight.
Nigel Harvey, chief executive of Recolight, said: “We see this position as instrumental in giving more companies access to a free lamp recycling service”.

Chief operating officer post filled at Zero Waste Scotland
Zero Waste Scotland will ‘step up’ its work with Scottish businesses and organisations on the circular economy following the appointment of Jill Farrell as its first chief operating officer, it said.
Ms Farrell has over 25 years’ experience in business and economic development, including senior roles with Scottish Enterprise and the University of Strathclyde.
Iain Gulland, Zero Waste Scotland chief executive, said: “Interest in the circular economy is growing and Scotland is seen as one of the front-running nations globally. Zero Waste Scotland is accelerating the shift to a circular economy through the investment and expert support we’re able to provide organisations with.
“We’re delighted to welcome Jill into this key new role. In particular, her experience of running programmes which help businesses to innovate and grow – including on an international dimension – will be vital to achieving Scotland’s circular economy ambitions.”
Ms Farrell added: “I’ve been impressed with the work that the Scottish Government and its agencies have started to help get the idea of the circular economy into mainstream business thinking. There’s an estimated £1.8 trillion opportunity across Europe from moving towards this new way of doing business and Scotland’s in a great place to capitalise on that.

Quercus appoints Whelan as partner
Corporate finance adviser Quercus Corporate Finance has announced the arrival of Mark Whelan as a partner – who will work with clients in the waste, recycling and industrial services sector.

Mr Whelan joins the firm from EY, and has previously worked for KPMG and Cleanaway, now part of Veolia.
Quercus said that Mr Whelan has completed over 60 transactions in the waste sector including advising Reconomy on the sale of its Recycling Solutions business to Viridor and Cory on the sale of its Municipal Services business to Biffa.
Mr Whelan, who has over 28 years of experience in M&A said: “The firm’s progress over the past three years is highly impressive and the opportunity to work with such a talented and well respected team with a clear strategy for growth was too compelling to turn down.”

Edmundson joins Ubico
Local authority-backed services firm Ubico has announced the appointment of Gareth Edmundson as its new managing director.
Ubico said that Mr Edmundson’s previous experience with the royal borough of Greenwich and his ‘extensive experience’ in commissioning and managing services played a ‘pivotal role’ in its decision to appoint him.
Mr Edmundson said: “I am delighted to have been offered the position of managing director at Ubico Ltd and I am looking forward to joining a successful and ambitious team.
